Black Skirt 5 Ways

Hello gorgeous people! It’s Cait, currently coming to you from my closet.

Today, we’re talking styling. How to use one item for all sorts of different occasions. Today’s culprit: the beloved black mini skirt. One of the most universal clothing items a woman can own. You can dress her up or down however you’d like; comfy coffee date? Black mini. Sexy night out with your new man? Black mini.

Don’t know where to start? No worries, babe. That’s why I’m here.

The first way we’re going to style the black mini skirt is for the holy Girl’s Day Out. You girls might take some pics as you walk around town, hop into a cafe for some pastries and a chai, or browse a new bookstore. Whatever it is, you know you have to look cute: you never know when your girls will snap your this is her photo.

Where we’re going with this is simple. Keep it classy, but comfy.

I went for a stretchy tank, a light poncho, some cowboy boots, and a big bag. Here’s the logic: mobility, comfort, class. The poncho’s easily removable in case your adventures get sweaty, and the bag is big enough to fit whatever goodies you may grab. These boots were indeed made for walking, and on the town with the girls, you’ll be dropping into every store you pass. Get those steps in in style, queen! To top it off, I added a gold necklace, a belly chain, a bracelet, some hoop earrings, and a medium-tinted shade for indoor and outdoor wear- like I said, we’re going to shop till we drop!

Now, we all know us girls keep it demure on a GDO, but nothing beats what follows: Girl’s NIGHT Out. That’s our next stop, ladies.

The black mini is for when you want something other than your classic jeans and a top. It’s the year to mix it up for the clubs and concerts, and that’s exactly what we’re doing here. With a high waisted skirt like mine, I usually go for something that contrasts the length when I want to keep the outfit a bit spicy. Long shirts are for the office, babe. Not the club.

Here, I kept the base simple. Black mini, black bandeau, black knee-high boots, and a black bag. We want the accessories to be the outfit here. Sparkle and shine are back in style, and we are making the most of it. Throw on those layered necklaces, stacked bracelets, and shiny belts. Stick some thick-a** hoops in your ears, and pull back that hair with a studded headband. It’s time to embrace metal. You’re going to dance, might as well sparkle while you do it. The logic here is all about confidence. You want to feel sexy and fierce on a night out, so whatever you put on better feel like your most authentic style!

You may be asking, Cait, what about when I want to feel sexy but don’t want to show off too much? Girl, you read my mind.

Next fit: Date Night.

Scenario: your new mans texts you. I’m picking you up in 30. Dress nice. Instead of the immediate panic you’d have felt yesterday, today you know exactly what to do. Grab the black mini, babe. It’s time to cook.

With this outfit, we’re going to keep it sexy, but refined. We’re giving etiquette. Serving class. We want him to want more, yes? So don’t give it all away just yet!

Again, going with all black here, but that’s because we want to draw attention to the pop of the red. The hint of color with the shoes and bag is eye catching, the shape of the heel accentuates the legs and lengthens the body, and as we all know black is slimming as hell. This outfit is simple, but powerful. You’re showing off your curves while keeping things contained. This top is backless, so there’s a bit of skin showing if that’s your vibe, but this outfit works with a plain fitted black tee as well. Lastly, I made sure to wear the metal jewelry I want my engagement ring to be, obviously. If he’s not paying close attention to the metal of choice on date night, he’s not worth your time.

Next, we’ll look at dressing the skirt down. We’re tackling the ultimate lazy occasion. The one you’ve never tried to look good for a day in your life: the hangover coffee trip. Well, I’m terribly sorry to break this to you, but you’re trying next time, babe. It’s a Look Good, Feel Good summer.

Obviously, the main concern of this outfit is comfort, but I’m here to teach you how to style comfort. How to make it look classy, yet effortless.

All I did to spice up this T-shirt look was throw on a spiked headband, sunglasses, and a chunky necklace. I’ve still got the comfy beat-up converse, the homemade tote bag, and my sister’s old shirt on since it was all I could grab in my hungover confusion, but at least I made it look cute, right? That’s the key to being a fashionista. All you need is a little accessorizing and you’re set.

This outfit is a great example of how accessories are really the key to styling. Without the shades and jewelry, this would still be cute, but it wouldn’t be stylish. And by God we are staying stylish this summer. Elevating our fits one piece of jewelry at a time!

For the last occasion, I wanted to show a way to make this a appropriate piece that you could wear to a family dinner while still looking cute. With a universal item like a black skirt, it’s easier than you think.

All I did here was throw on a sweater that went past the waist-band. It’s that easy! Add some coordinated boots and a simple bag and you’re set. Of course, we’re still accessorizing. Here, I went with gold to match the brown tones of the bear on the sweater and the boots. Don’t be afraid to stray away from your usual metal. I was a silver only girl until recently. I took the turn to gold when I started mixing metals and realized there was infinitely more styling possibilities when I didn’t fear the yellow-ish side of the metal spectrum!

Alright, y’all. That’s all from me today. I’m planning on making this a sort of series, so definitely look out for more styling posts from me, soon to come!

Closing the closet,

Cait Kem
